Dear Sir,

I had registered the following complaint, with M/S C.R. Scooters, authorized dealer for M/S Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (Pvt.) Ltd., on 21/09/2009 but have received no response till date.

I bought a Honda Activa Scooter from M/s C.R.Scooters, Racecourse, Vadodara, on 09/09/2008. As per your warranty terms and service schedule the scooter was given to your authorized service center for servicing, the details of which are given here under.

If according to your own norms the engine oil needs to be changed every 4000 kms. and the spark plug & the air cleaner at every 12,000 kms, I would like to know the reasons behind the frequent changes of engine Oils and other parts made to my scooter.
I have already tried to raise this query giving feedback to M/s Honda Motorcycles & Scooters (Pvt.) Ltd. through their official web site www.honda2wheelersindia.com but unfortunately the site is either dead or they are simply not interested in any customer feedback.

You are therefore requested to please take up the matter with your company and your principals and revert back immediately in the matter.

Honda Activa scooter, manufactured and marketed in India, by M/S. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (Pvt.) Ltd, (HMSI), comes with two years warranty applicable only if the vehicle has been serviced by HMSI authorized dealer as per service schedule and maintained in accordance with the instructions mentioned in the Owner's Manual.

The service schedule calls for mandatory four free and three paid services during the warranty period wherein other than the routine inspection and adjustments, over a period of two years, the engine oil is replaced seven times and the spark plug & the air cleaner is replaced twice, at the cost of the customer.

In India, scooters are used mostly by students, housewives, working ladies and middle age & elderly people where normally the usage is around 200 to maximum 500 kms./month. Though HMSI recommends replacement of oil after every 4000 kms, and replacement of spark plug & air filter after every 12000 kms, the customer having an average run of 350 kms/month is forced to pay, for replacement of oil after every 1400kms and spark plug & air filters after every 4200 kms, for two years in order to satisfy the warranty conditions.

For an annual sale of over 5,50,000 Activa Scooters in India, HMSI is able to sell nearly 3 million liters of engine oil of their own brand (price approx. Rs. 550 million) and nearly 2 million spark plugs & air cleaners (price approx. Rs. 450 million), collects nearly 2.7 million liters of sparingly used engine oil, (not returned to the customer), and generates scrape of nearly 2 million spark plugs and air filters by premature replacement, every year, under the guise of warranty.

Apart from wasting of customers money on unnecessary replacements, this also is criminal waste of resources and raw materials by an ISO certified company committed to an environment policy, part of which, reads as under.

"HMSI is committed to achieve, environmental excellence in all its industrial activities by way of promoting conservation of resources such as energy, water, oil and greases and other raw materials, by reusing, recycling and minimizing the waste generation."

"Is HMSI taking its Indian customers for a ride?"

The question certainly needs to be answered.
