Unprofessional, rude behavior by store manager

I'd like to bring to your attention the incredibly unprofessional attitude that I got from your store manager this morning. (She told me her name was Carrie; she wasn't wearing a name tag so I'm not sure if she was making that up or not. This was at 11:30 am. She is of medium build with brown hair, and looks high school age.)
A few weeks ago I bought two items with cash. They didn't fit so this morning I brought the items, with tags still on them, and my receipt to the store to get a refund. Carrie refused to give me a refund without first seeing my driver's license.
Now, I don't agree with your policy on having to show ID for cash returns, but that is not what I am writing you about. I am writing because of Carrie's nasty, immature attitude and behavior.
I refused to show her my driver's license and she refused to give me my refund. I was asking valid questions about the policy. All the while I was being courteous and respectful but Carrie wasn't. I asked her who made the policy and did she have a copy of it in writing. She just stared at me incredulously. She could answer neither question. When I asked her if someone else might be able to give me more information, she ignored me and tried another tack.
She started examining my merchandise and said, "These have been worn and washed so I can't accept them anyway." That was a lie; both items still had their tags on them, in brand-new condition. When I pointed that out to her, she inspected them further and said, "Well, there is cat hair on this one!" I told her that that was interesting, since I didn't own a cat. It was as if she was looking for a reason to not issue me a return, and I told her that I didn’t appreciate it.
I then asked her to call her regional manager because I would like to speak with them. She said "Yeah, sure, whatever!" and stormed off. I was honestly waiting for her to stomp her feet at this point.
I waited up at the counter for another ten minutes while she went about assisting other customers and answering the phone, completely ignoring me. I suppose she thought I'd just leave, but I wasn't going anywhere without either my refund or, at the very least, without my questions about the policy answered. If she could have explained more about the policy to me, I wouldn’t have had a problem, but I could get no more information out of her and she refused to call a regional manager.
After ten more minutes I guess she realized I wasn't going away so she gave me my refund and said, "Are you happy now?" I was putting my money away, about to thank her and leave when she added sarcastically, "Are you going to stand here all day?" I told her no, that I had to get home so I could write a letter to her superiors and let them know how she treats customers.
Again, it's not the policy I'm complaining about. It's Carrie and her maturity level and how she treats customers in the store. She seems like she can't be any more than nineteen and truly doesn't seem mature enough to be able to handle her job. She obviously needs much more training and is not qualified, nor can she handle the pressures of, being a manager. |
